The Shot Peener is pleased to announce that the recipient of the first inaugural “Shot Peener of the Year” award is Mr. Charlie Mason of Menasco Aerospace Ltd. in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. Charlie is Team Leader of the Shot Peen Department, which is one of Menasco’s many Process lmprovement Teams (PIT).
Menasco Aerospace is a wholly owned subsidiary of Coltec Industries Inc. Menasco supplies landing gear and flight control components and has annual sales in excess of $88 Million (Canadian). Coltec Industries is a New York based manufacturing company with revenues of approximately $1.4 Billion (U.S.) annually, serving aerospace, automotive and other industrial markets.
Mr. Mason’s expertise in the field of SPC (Statistical Process Control) and DOE (Design of Experiments) was recently communicated at the “Shot Peening Workshop” held in Cincinnati. Charlie’s presentation highlighted SPCIDOE as it was implemented at Menasco. Several examples of “out of control” conditions were shown along with remedial actions. The SPCIDOE charts which were presented proved, with actual documented data, that shot peening processes can be measured, monitored, controlled and improved to achieve more stringent specifications such as those required by Boeing’s new aircraft, the 777.
The success of Menasco’s Continuous Quality lmprovement program (M.C.Q.I.) was reflected in Mr. Mason’s presentation and Charlie acknowledged top management’s dedication and support as a major contributor. M.C.Q.I. has elevated Menasco Aerospace to new heights and most recently helped them earn Boeing’s prestigious “Presidents Award for Excellence” in the field of Major Outside Production. Menasco has also acquired Boeing’s D1-9000 quality program approval.
Mr. Charlie Mason along with team members Kevin Robins, Nelson Lemus, Lionel Seepaulsing, and Steve Nelson were presented with a plaque and a certificate on March 10, 1993. Mr. Ken I’Anson of Blastworks Inc. made the presentation on behalf of “The Shot Peener”
