Charlie Barrett received the third annual award as Shot Peener of the Year during ceremonies at the 1994 Shot Peening Workshop held in San Antonio, Texas. Charlie said he was quite surprised at the announcement, but for many of his colleagues in the audience, it wasn’t a surprise.
Charlie has been active in shot peening for over I5 years having recently retired as Manager of Special Projects from The Metal Improvement Co., division of Curtis Wright. Special Projects involved program management, process development, special machinery design, facility construction and preparation for programs. Prior to joining Metal Improvement Co., Charlie spent 18 years in metal fabrication for Marine, Industrial, and Medical Research equipment fields.
Charlie continues to consult for MIC in addition to his service to SAE as Chairman (since 1986) of the Surface Enhancement Committee. The Surface Enhancement Division deals with the cold working (shot peening) treatment of machine components such as springs, torsion bars, gears, shafts, etc. for fatigue life improvement. The Division writes and maintains the current status of 1 I specifications and two handbooks, all pertaining to the shot peening process. He is also a member of the organizing committee for ICSP-6. He has written numerous articles on shot peening and is one of the world’s leading experts on peen forming.
Charlie’s rich background and his easy-going lecture style as one of the workshop speakers earned him the highest scores on the student questionnaires.
The award and plaque were presented to Charlie by Jack Champaigne, editor the The Shot Peener and sponsor of the workshop. In his remarks Champaigne congratulated Charlie for his dedication to our industry and thanked him for his contribution.
